CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - CHICAGO, IL — Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson fired a stern warning at President Trump on Tuesday, urging the president to "respect the Constitution" after federal directives instructed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to intensify deportation operations in Democratic-led sanctuary cities—including Chicago. In response, city officials announced a resurgence of the “Know Your Rights” educational campaign, aimed at empowering vulnerable communities.
At a crowded City Hall podium, Mayor Johnson emphasized how urgent the situation is.
“Even if the federal government doesn't know or care about the Constitution, Chicagoans deserve to know their constitutional rights,” he said.
In collaboration with the CTA, this new campaign will appear on over 400 digital screens inside subway stations and buses. Passengers can scan QR codes that link to a multilingual guide explaining what to do if approached, stopped, or detained by ICE.
Beatriz Ponce de León, Chicago’s Deputy Mayor for Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights, spoke about the palpable anxiety in immigrant neighborhoods.
“We can't tell people not to be afraid,” she acknowledged. “What we can do is give people information. The best that people can do is be prepared”.
