CHICAGO - Former Chicago Alderman Edward M. Burke, once a central figure in the city's political environment, has quietly been released from federal prison after serving just nine months of a two-year sentence. A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that Burke was transferred from the low-security facility in Thomson, Illinois, to community confinement on Tuesday. He is now expected to complete the rest of his sentence either at home or in a halfway house.
Although he’s no longer incarcerated, Burke remains under supervision by the Bureau of Prisons. When his official release date arrives on February 20, he will begin a mandatory year of supervised release, during which he must adhere to strict federal guidelines.
