CHICAGO, IL - Last week, when asked whether he’d use a property tax increase help close the budget gap, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson replied it was too soon to say one way or the other. This resulted in immediate criticism from Chicago City Council members and concern expressed by residents. The Mayor quickly reversed direction and stated he is staunchly against raising property taxes and won’t be asking for an increase in his budget proposal. However, Aldermen are getting frustrated with the mayor’s lack of a definitive plan to address the $1.2 billion budget deficit.
When asked about layoffs, Johnson again replied that it’s too early to tell if this will be in the mix of solutions. The only solutions the mayor provided were vague without actual details regarding what he meant or how to make options happen.
